Lower the volume: Britannica no longer a book

The Encyclopedia Britannica was part of my childhood. As a bookworm (no doubt I would be called a geek or a nerd today), I could get lost in its millions of facts and figures. My parents (mostly my dad) agreed with the door-to-door salesman that the 30-volume encyclopedia, plus atlas and yearbooks, would be the perfect source of knowledge for the family.

Does your mom know what you do for a living?

I work as a communications consultant. A “communications consultant” sounds like some desperate attempt to come up with a new job description, like when they renamed “cleaners” to “hygiene technicians” in the 1990s. I can’t give you a brief explanation of what a communications consultant does, because we all do different things.
